Design

Having Holland's Bloom create a design for a garden area usually involves a process with several steps.  Communication between all parties is important all along the way.

The basic steps in the design process include:
  • An initial on-site consultation – looking at the area, talking with the client, taking measurements and photos, getting a feel for the project as a whole.
  • Design creation – could include a return visit, clarifying questions via telephone or email – with the result being one or more possibilities rendered in a hand-drawn design.
  • Drawing(s) presented – either in person or mailed. Follow-up conversations can discuss any questions or changes desired. Alternatives can provide variations in style, cost, materials used or other factors.
  • A detailed estimate for doing the work can be provided at the same time as the design, or as a follow-up step. The estimate includes a breakdown of costs for different components, use of subcontractors, alternative materials, etc, and the time involved in the various steps of installation.

Often there is an option to develop the design in stages.

The design process can be independent of any other work and is not restricted to the traditional gardening season.

Sometimes a design is used for immediate installation work. But a whole garden design can also provide an overall, long-term goal, to be worked on as time and finances allow. This can allow the garden owner to be finding desired materials while waiting for the appropriate time to perform the work. The garden design can be seen as a blueprint, but often it becomes the starting point that evolves as a project progresses, particularly when a garden is developed in stages.

Having a design and estimate in hand can lead to Holland's Bloom taking on the installation and/or implementation of the design.  Increasingly, however, our work focus is on smaller projects and balancing our full schedule so larger projects could require other collaberation.
